We are praying that God would move our hearts toward one another in compassion!
It seems that we are a family of "softies" when it comes to those OUTSIDE our inner circle. It's easy for us to notice the "man with the withered hand", the neighbor with a special needs son, the family with no home due to domestic violence, and yes, even the beggar on the side of the road. Often we notice, we pray, and act with a compassionate heart. We are the first to step up and deliver bags full of groceries to the doorstep of others in need. The kids have us pull over and pray every time we pass an accident or hear a siren. Sarah is often brought to tears by events in the world such as the trapped miners or the thought of one person who does not yet know the Goods News of Christ.
However, It seems our deep felt compassion and long suffering flies right out the window when the person in need is right here in our own home or extended family. Instead we are often quick to judge. We know the details, we know the habits and actions that put one another in need in the first place. We think to ourselves "Good grief...do you really need that again, or come on...are you really still dealing with that! We often don't feel great compassion when we know the struggle is going to cost us something we are not willing to give. It costs more to show compassion, long suffering, or patience to those whose lives effect your own.
It's easy to stumble upon "the man with the withered hand" and give a "token" of compassion. Much harder if you are familar with him, see him everyday in the city, know the circumstances which brought him to his piont of need, or used to hearing him complain. Often times we think to ourselves that the need of the other doesn't compare or outwiegh our present need. It appears often easier to show compassion to a stranger, than to a family member.
PRAISE BE TO GOD who is familar with us intimately and is still moved to compassion!! He knows our habits! He knows our hearts, and knows what got us in this situation to begin with (wether it was any fault of our own or not) He shows compassion on us time and time again!
Lord as a family help us to show compassion to one another in our home and those you bring into our path!
